History of

WATER ON WALDRIFT

This unique piece of land was discovered about 2000 years ago, with alleged rock drawings found and was declared a Heritage site in 1971 by Professor David Morris Head of Archeology at Kimberley’s McGregor Museum.

Located on the farm Waldrift the sandstone rock features a variety of petroglyphs (rock engravings). The 244 engravings identified at the site represent a few animal figures and many unusual geometric designs and are particularly interesting because of their unusual nature and symmetry.

Vereeniging discovered its origin from coal operations that took place on the farm Waldrift, coal was discovered in 1879. Redan as it is known today, was a town built for workers of the power station in the area, electricity was generated, coal was transported with trains from the mine to the power station. The mine was later discontinued due to too much water, all mine tools were left in the mine.

The water has a very high sulfur content and is not suitable for human consumption, but the element is very good for crops, the farm extracts the water from the mine to irrigate crops.

On 1 November 2009, Pieter and Martina Hamman Boerdery become the new owners of Waldrift. Martina immediately saw the potential in the farmhouse and turned it into a guest house, she would like to share the passion of farming and hospitality with people.

In December 2014 tragedy struck, during the visit of guests a fire broke out and the guest house burns down…

In January 2016, the new construction begins and we tackle everything with the same warm passion as the flames that sowed so much devastation.

In 2017, we kept the promise and rebuilt the new walls, in all their glory! Water on Waldrift guest farm now receives guests with genuine farmers hospitality.

A windmill as a symbol of water, hope and new life now stands against the wall where the fire started in 2014.
There’s life again, Water on Waldrift – the windmill’s wheel turns, draws water from rock and we will live, plant, plow, harvest and feed again … and we want to share that with others.

Come experience the wonder of water, the bubble of hospitality, the softness of a feather blanket, the food of our earth, and may the wheel bring you back again and again to Water on Waldrift guest farm.
